GENERAL INFORMATION: The undergraduate catalog contains requirements for all degrees. It is the student’s responsibility to be familiar with the policies, procedures, and course requirements described in the undergraduate catalog.
• Degrees require a minimum number of overall hours (this can be found on your Degree Audit; your transcript will not represent an accurate degree hours total). A minimum of 30 hours must be completed at Texas State University.
• Degrees require a minimum number of 36 advanced hours (this can be found on your Degree Audit). Of the 36 advanced hours, 24 must be completed at Texas State University.
• Violation of the 45/30 Hour Rule or the 3 Attempt Rule may result in being charged an excess hours fee. To learn more about this policy go to Student Business Services. Please ask your advisor if you have any questions regarding this information.
• Texas State University has a specific repeat policy. Information on this policy can be found in the undergraduate catalog. It is your responsibility to understand this policy prior to repeating coursework.
• Apply for graduation at the beginning of the semester you intend to complete all degree requirements. Deadline date information can be found on the academic calendar. The Tuition Rebate application and guidelines is located within the graduation application.
• All students (including transfer students) seeking graduation with honors must have completed a minimum of 54 credit hours at Texas State plus the appropriate Texas State GPA. Calculation of the GPA to determine honors is based on all Texas State hours. The catalog contains all the requirements for graduating with honors. Honors announced at Commencement are based on previous semester standing.
• Students are responsible for checking their registration eligibility to determine registration time and hold status. This information can be accessed on the Office of the University Registrar's website.
• If you do not attend for a Spring or Fall semester you must reapply for the semester you intend to return. You should review the Undergraduate Admissions website for information.
MUSIC ADVISING:
• Advising holds are placed on the 12th class day of each Fall and Spring term. If you have a hold in place, you will NOT be able to drop a course for the current term. Failure to see a Music Advisor in a timely manner will delay the removal of your hold and could impact the courses you get to register for an/or delay your graduation timeline.
• Per the Undergraduate Catalog, Music Students MUST be enrolled in a major ensemble every semester. The only exceptions are during student teaching semester, and for the BA and music majors who have met the degree requirement.
• If you are seeking All-level Teaching Certification through Music Studies, your overall GPA must be a 2.75 for Upper Level Competency Review and to graduate.
GRADUATION PLANS/TIMELINES FOR MUSIC MAJORS: Most majors have specific requirements in order to progress in the degree following their Upper Level Competency Review (ULCR).
• It is the student's responsibility to critically evaluate any deferral or failure from the ULCR. Adjustments made following a deferral may delay graduation.
• Beginning your music degree with Basic Musicianship and/or lack of progression in Music Theory and/or Aural Skills may delay courses the courses taken in junior year and therefore impact graduation timelines.
• The School of Music holds the right to refuse entrance or progression in the degree plan. Requests for enrollment into courses that are closed must originate with your Music Advisor and they will send it through the appropriate channels.
• Graduation plans are subject to change. Curriculum, course offerings, and class schedules are subject to change.
FINANCIAL AID: The information provided in advising is strictly academic and is not based on Federal Financial Aid rules. To ensure you are meeting Financial Aid Rules, contact the Texas State University Office of Financial Aid at (512) 245-2315.
• Advisors will NOT assume you have aid when planning your courses. If receiving full time financial aid is a concern, please make your Music Advisor aware at the beginning of the appointment.
• If you believe you are taking degree applicable courses but they are showing up as not counting towards your Financial Aid Award, it if your responsibility to contact a Music Advisor and provide this information.
• Your Advisor CANNOT provide financial information or give you any information on how your degree applicability impacts your aid. You must contact Financial Aid for this information.
• Your Advisor will try to keep your graduation timelines AND financial aid requirements under consideration when planning your academic courses but it is your responsibility to make sure you understand and meet requirements for your aid award.
