Frequently Asked Questions

  • To schedule an appointment, please call us at 512.245.1932 to be scheduled with the next available appointment for your major.

  • You will get an email with links to our advising forms and a link to join your Zoom advising appointment from your advisor. Please contact us if you have not received your link at lest one hour prior to your appointment.

  • Students will meet one-on-one with an advisor to go over degree requirements for their major/minor and determine priority courses for the following semester.

  • We recommend all students to see an advisor at least once a semester before any registration period.

    Students on academic probation must see an advisor to have Academic Holds removed before any registration period.

    Pre-Mass Communicationpre-Communication Design, pre-Theatre in Film Production and pre-Communication Studies majors must see an advisor to have pre-major holds lifted before any registration period.

    We encourage all music majors to see a music advisor before registration.

  • Academic probation is an emphatic warning that the quality of your work has not met Texas State's minimum academic standards. You will be placed on academic probation at the end of the fall or spring semester in which the Texas State GPA is lower than 2.00. You will need to meet with an advisor to discuss your academic plan prior to registration. You will be removed from academic probation once your Texas State GPA is 2.00 or higher.

  • Students may see any advisor in the Advising Center for their major. We will schedule you with the first available appointment for your major. Please let us know if you have an advisor you would prefer to see when scheduling your appointment. 

  • Plan ahead when scheduling an appointment since advisors can get booked several weeks in advance during registration periods. Meeting with an advisor before your access period for registration is ideal. Please call our office at 512.245.1932 to schedule your appointment. 

    For summer and fall registration, see an advisor in late February.

    For the spring registration, see an advisor in late September.

  • An advising hold is used by departments to ensure that you receive appropriate assistance - before you register for courses. You must attend an academic advising appointment to have the advising hold removed. Please call our office at 512.245.1932 to schedule your appointment. 

  • Occasionally, because of unforeseen circumstances, substitutions may be necessary. This may be because the proposed substitution is justifiably similar to the required course or because the proposed substitution is necessary to meet your academic and/or work schedule.

    To seek approval, consult your advisor or email CFACadvising@txstate.edu. Approval to substitute a course must be obtained before you register for a possible substitute.
